I’ve always seen is as a more defensive grip, honestly. It removes any reach the blade may have granted you, has no extension whatsoever, but completely covers your entire arm and most of your torso when just being held in that manner. It effectively turns the saber blade into a shield.

Exactly, the reverse grip is a shield, the one held normally is used for offense.  Ehlial’s just a little lightsaber combat genius. XD It makes up for the other areas he’s severely lacking in. >.>

I was actually wondering earlier today why you don’t see anyone doing exactly this in SW canon. It’s a remarkably effective technique, even if you’re just learning to dual-wield. And if you’re not still learning, it’s just plain nasty, of course.
I was also wondering whether BW will put lightsaber shotos in the game one day so Eskrel can have one for his off-hand. Now, THAT held in a reverse grip in the offhand would be a nice parrying weapon.

Chaemera and I have been geeking about this sort of thing on and off for awhile now.  It has me researching the different forms, fun geekery in and of itself.  That and Ehlial is such a joy to play.
We should discuss this more when we meet tonight. :D

As someone with actual training in sword, shield, and dagger combat, the reverse grip is a nasty piece of work. Ideal for parrying the follow through can be immediately halted and your entire stance can shift into a whirling dervish of blades. It’s pretty devastating against a single weapon opponent. The biggest drawbacks are, as stated, lack of reach, but also the inability to use your full strength. On a  side note, I have tried using a full length blade (around 35 inches) in a reverse grip, and it really taxes the muscles in your arm.

Hmm, that reminds me I haven’t really looked into the actual weight of a lightsaber.

It’s a recurring theme in canon that lightsabers weigh crap-all, since the blade itself has no mass. It’s half the reason they’re so tricky to handle, because you have no inertia-feedback from waving around 3+ feet of “blade.” On the other hand, this allows for all sorts of crazy maneuvers that wouldn’t be possible with a normal blade due to said extra mass.

As a note, look up the Guard shoto. It’s basically a lightsaber tonfa. It exists in Star Wars canon. It’s allows for the same kind of protection and advantage one might get from the reverse grip without taxing the wrist as much since the main grip is at a 90 degree angle from the rest of the hilt.  The downside is that you continue to lose some of the offensive capabilities because of the grip.
Still pretty badass though…

Fortunately, I haven’t eaten at a Five Guys in months so this makes boycotting the affected ones in Durham easier.
